What is Tai Chi Chuan?

Tai Chi Chuan literally translates to "Grand Ultimate Fist: Tai Chi Chuan is a martial art, and is a form a Wushu(War Art) developed to cultivate one's internal engergy, or Chi.

Why should I learn Tai Chi Chuan?

There are many reason to learn Tai Chi Chuan. First, it helps to build balance and coordination. Second, it teaches proper breathing and stretching which increases stamina and endurance. Third, Tai Chi Chuan teaches martial arts applications in a low impact manner. And fourth, Tai Chi improves overall health and functioning abiltiy in all aspects of one's life.

Is Tai Chi Chuan hard to learn?

Initially yes, but over time it becomes easier. Tai Chi Chuan is done slow, which can be difficult at first as one learns balance and coordination. Tai Chi Chuan is also very detail oriented, which can seem overwhelming at first. However, students who perservere through the first few weeks will find themselves pleasantly rewarded with improved balance, coordination, flexibilty, and overall confidence.

Am I the right age to do Tai Chi Chuan?

All ages are the right age for Tai Chi Chuan, however for different reasons Tai Chi can be challenging to both the very young students, and substantially, older students. Very young students may find the slow movements and meditative aspects of Tai Chi insufficent to hold their attention. Much older students may find the slow movements and detailed nature of Tai Chi very challenging and overwhelming. The question to ask, is whether Tai Chi Chuan is right for me?

Do I need special equipment or clothing to do Tai Chi Chuan?

No. The only required clothing or equipment needed for Tai Chi is comfortable, loose fitting, clothing. Generally sweat pants or similar clothing, and tee-shirt or sweat shirt are all that's needed. Most students prefer to wear socks, go barefoot, or purchase Tai Chi Shoes. The only hard and fast rule as far as equipment goes is that NO street shoes are permitted on the Do Jang (Training area) floor.

What else do I need to know?

Tai Chi Chuan is a fun and rewarding martial art. Everyone learns at their own pace, questions are welcome, and the only rule is that everyone should be respectful and have fun. Come with an open mind and an eagerness to learn, and your efforts will be rewarded!
